Los Angeles Clippers History

In 1984 the Los Angeles Clippers moved to Los Angeles, California, playing in the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena while the Los Angeles Lakers, with a better reputation, continued to play at the Great Western Forum venue in Inglewood, a few miles south. The Los Angeles Clippers were completely overshadowed by their cross-town counterparts, who were in the midst of a NBA championship run with future Hall of Famers, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy. The Los Angeles Clippers, under head coach Jim Lynam (and later Don Chaney) and new acquistions Marques Johnson, Junior Bridgeman, and Harvey Catchings, ended with a disappointing 31-51 record in the first NBA season in the City of Angels.

The next seven NBA seasons (1985-1992), the Los Angeles Clippers were mired in futility, including a 12-70 record in the 1986-1987 NBA season, the third-worst single-season record in NBA Basketball history. That specific NBA season was filled with injuries to both Marques Johnson and guard Norm Nixon, who missed most of the NBA season. That basketball season also brought in Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor as the team's vice president and general manager of NBA basketball operations, a post he holds (2005). In the 1989-1990 NBA season, Baylor made a player trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers that brought Ron Harper, a rising star guard, in exchange for forward Danny Ferry (who refused to play for the Los Angeles Clippers) and guard Reggie Williams. That move, along with the 1987 draft of Ken Norman from the University of Illinois, the 1988 draftings of Kansas University forward Danny Manning and Charles Smith from the University of Pittsburgh, and the 1990 draft of Loy Vaught from the University of Michigan, shaped a nucleus that led the Los Angeles Clippers franchise to a play-off appearance in 1992, the first since 1976 when the Clippers basketball team was still in Buffalo.

Midway through the 1991-92 season, the Los Angeles Clippers made another coaching change, but this one worked out in their side. Larry Brown, who was fired by the San Antonio Spurs weeks before, was hired as the team's head coach in late January 1992. Larry Brown replaced head coach Mike Schuler, who at the point of his dismissal, posted a 22-25 record. Larry Brown ended the NBA season with a 23-12 mark, and the overall record for Los Angeles Clippers was 45-37. Los Angeles Clippers NBA team were eliminated in the first round of the play-offs by the Utah Jazz, 3 games to 2. because of the late April 1992 Los Angeles riots, game 4 of their series was moved to the Anaheim Convention Center, and the Los Angeles Clippers won that basketball game. The Los Angeles Clippers returned to the play-offs once again in the 1992-1993 basketball season and again lost in five games in the first round, but this time was to the Houston Rockets basketball team.

From 1994 - 1999, the Los Angeles Clippers played some Baskteball home games in the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, sharing the venue with a plethora of other water-themed teams including the Mighty Ducks (hockey team) and the Splash (soccer team).

Clippers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

It has been one step forward, two steps back, one step forward, another step back, and finally a step forward for the Clippers this summer.

To recap: All-Star guard Baron Davis opted out of the final year of his contract with the Golden State Warriors, to sign a five-year, $65 million contract with the Clippers.

Instantly, Clipper Nation dreamed of a return to the playoffs, visualizing a one-two scoring power force of Davis and the face of the franchise, forward Elton Brand.

But, shockingly, Brand foiled those plans when he spurned the Clippers to sign a five-year, $81 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Several theories have been reported as to why Brand left the Clippers in favor of the Sixers—tired of losing; insulted at what he perceived...

The Clippers acquired the 30-year-old local product from the Utah Jazz on Wednesday in exchange for Brevin Knight in a swap of point guards. "We are glad to have Jason back with us," general manager Elgin Baylor said in a statement. "He played an important role for us when he was here previously, and we think he will be a valuable component this...

Camby still upset about the way Nuggets traded him (AP)

Elgin Baylor, Los Angeles Clippers vice president of basketball operations, left, introduces Marcus Camby during a news conference Monday, July 21, 2008, in Los Angeles.

Six days later, and Marcus Camby still can't believe what went down. It does seem a bit difficult to fathom. The Los Angeles Clippers acquired Camby, the NBA's leading shot-blocker the past three seasons, from the Denver Nuggets last Tuesday for the option to exchange second-round picks with the Clippers in 2010.
